1951
Four individuals met at the residence of Dr. S.T. Narasimhan in Madras on 8th December 1951 and formed the Neurological Society of India. They (Dr. Jacob Chandy (Neurosurgeon) and Dr. Baldev Singh (Neurologist) from C.M.C. Hospital, Vellore and Dr. S.T. Narasimhan (Physician and Electrophysiologist) and Dr. B. Ramamurthi (Neurosurgeon) from Madras Medical College & Hospital enrolled themselves as members and formulated the constitution.
1952
1. The first meeting of the Neurological Society of India was held at Hyderabad on 3 March 1952
2. It was decided to publish an Indian Journal - NEUROLOGY. The journal was edited and published by the Secretary, Dr. B. Ramamurthi.
1953
As there was already a journal called NEUROLOGY in existence it was decided to rename the Society's Journal as 'NEUROLOGY INDIA".
1956
The emblem of the Society prepared by Dr. W. Grillmayr was approved.
1958
In keeping with international practice, it was decided to have sub-sections of Neurology, Neurosurgery, Neuropathology and Neuroradiology in the Society.
1960
It was decided to form a Central Registry of Neuropathology and Dr.C.G.S. Iyer was requested to start the registry.
1962
The constitution of the Society was finalised.
1963
Decided to hold meetings independent of the Association of Physicians of India.
1969
1. Dr. Jacob Chandy Oration was established
2. The Society got registered with the Charity Commissioner, Public Trusts Registration Office, Greater Bombay Region as No. F-1819 (B) dated 25 October 1969
1971
1. At Dr. K.S. Mani's suggestion Dr. T.K. Ghosh was asked to explore the possibility of forming the EEG Sub-section of the Society.
2. The 3rd Asian and Oceanian Congress of Neurology was Organised at Bombay from 29 November to 3 December 1971.
1972
1. Sub-Committee for standardisation of Postgraduate Education was formed with Dr. P.N. Tandon, Dr. Ramamurthi, Dr. R.N. Chatterjee, Dr. K.S. Mani and Dr. N.H. Wadia as members.
2. Instituted Travelling and Visiting Fellowships.
1974
1. Society decided upon a Continuing Medical Education Programme to be held along with the annual conference with the intention of providing up-dates on selected topics and encouraging inter-disciplinary inter-action among trainees in the various branches of the Neurological Sciences.
2. Dr.B.Ramamurthi Silver Jubilee Oration was instituted
1975
1. Dr. Asoke K. Bagchi and Dr. Sunil Pandya were appointed historians of the Society. They were to write the history of the Society and keep members informed about historically important events.
2. An award (Prof. Herbert Krause Medal) for Neuro-Oncology offered by Dr. Asoke K. Bagchi. was instituted by the Society
1977
1. It was decided to form Working Groups within the Society to deal with - (a) Medical Education and Training ; (b) Research priorities (c) Manpower requirements and development of Services, Community Programme & (d) Instrumentation.
2. The General Body approves the formation of Neurophysiology / EEG subsection.
3. In 1977 Neurophysiology / EEG sub-sections were formed. In 1979 the Society formed the Association of Neurological Nurses as a sub-section of the Society. This sub-section was registered with the Registrar of Firms and Societies, Chandigarh under Act 21 of 1860 as No. 1550 of 1988 and named as "Society of Indian Neurosciences Nurses (SINN)". The Society formed a sub-section of Neurophysiological Technologists in 1988 and this sub-section was registered with the Registrar of Firms and Societies, Chandigarh on 13th July 1989. (No. 1602 of 1989 and named as "Association of Neurophysiological Technologists of India (ANTI)".
It was decided to hold a Continuing Medical Education (C.M.E) Programme, along with the annual conference with the intention of providing updates on selected topics and encouraging interdisciplinary interaction among trainees in the various branches of the Neurological Sciences. Dr. S. Kalyanaraman organised the first C.M.E. Programme in 1977. The Neurological Society of India probably was the first medical professional society in the country to organise such formal CME programme. The CME programme was today immensely popular with the young and the old. Papers presented at the C.M.E. programme were subsequently published in a volume entitled "Progress in Clinical Neurosciences". Dr. K.K. Sinha was able to secure an International Standard Book Number (ISBN) 85138 for the CME. volumes published by the Society.
1978
1. A Gold Medal and a Silver Plaque were presented to Dr. Baldev Singh on his attaining the age of 75 years.
2. The establishment of a Library Reference Service was considered and Dr.D. Raja Reddy and Dr. K.V. Mathai were asked to put up details.
3. Started to supply the Texts of the papers presented the C.M.E. Programme to those wanted them. This was distributed as printed volumes from 1980.
4. The first volume of the Indian Text Book of Neurosurgery edited by Dr. B. Ramamurthi and Dr. P.N. Tandon was released.
1979
Dr. A.K. Banerji and Dr. Jacob Abraham organised a Conference of Nurses treating patients with Neurological disorders, along with the annual conference of the Society at NIMHANS, Bangalore and founded an Association of Neurological Nurses as a Sub-section of the Neurological Soceity of India and decided to hold Nurses Conference as part of the annual conference of the Society.
1981
The archives of the Society were located at the Department of Neurosurgery, K.E.M. Hospital, Parel, Mumbai - 400 012.
1982
Dr. M.C. Maheshwari and Dr. P.N. Tandon published under the aegis of the Society a volume containing the abstracts of all papers published in Neurology India over the 25 years wince its inception (1954-1979)
1983
It was decided during the annual conference at Madurai to start the publication of the Newsletter of the Society. The first issue of the Newsletter was published in January 1984.
1984
1. Dr. M. Natarajan and his colleagues of Madurai Neuro Association have offered two annual awards for - (a) the best poster presented at the annual conference of the Society, and (b) the top scorer in the Multiple Choice Question Examination held during the annual conference of the Society.
2. Dr. Asoke K. Bagchi set up a Travelling Fellowship (Endowment) in memory of the late Dr. Dwija Das Bagchi.
3. The Society set up an Educational Policy Committee consisting of the President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Dr. B. Ramamurthi, Dr. K. Jagannathan. Dr. G.N. Narayana Reddy and Dr. A.K. Banerjee (Chandigarh).
1985
1. The Educational and Policy Committee submitted its report on uniform curriculum for the M.Ch. in Neurosurgery throuughout the country.
2. Availability of facilities for training in Micro-Neurosurgery in AIIMS, with funds for travel and stay for the purspoe, was announced by Dr. P.N. Tandon.
3. Papers presented at the C.M.E. Programme, were published in volume entitled "Progress in Clinical Neuro-Sciences". Dr. K.K. Sinha has been able to secure a International Standard Book Number (ISBN) 85138 for C.M.E. volumes published by the Society The first EEG Technicians conference was organised by Dr.Ramesh Chandra as part of the Annual Conference at Patna.
1986
1. The EEG, EMG Sub-section of the Society was renamed as "Clinical Neurophysiology Sub-Section".
2. The General Body accepted the proposal of Dr. B. Ramamurthi regarding formation of a "Trauma Sub-committee" of Neurological Society of India. Dr. B. Ramamurthi was requested to form a committee regionally co-opting members.
3. The journal, Neurology India, got registered under Section 5 of the Press and Registration of Books Act 1867 vide Metropolitan Magistrate, Egmore (Madras) No. R. Dis. 563/87 dated 25.02.1987.
4. Allotment of ISBN number to Progress in Clinical Neurosciences.
1988
1. 1. Registration of the Society under Section 12 A (A) of the Income Tax Act 1961 has been obtained vide Commissioner of Income Tax. Bombay City No. INS/ 26413 dated 13.06.1988.
2. Income Tax Exemption Certificate under Section 80G of Income Tax Act 1961 was obtained upto 30-9-1989 vide Commissioner of Income Tax, Bombay City No. TC/80g/CH-728N(6) BC.IV/Trust Cell/295 (2)349/88-89 dated 22.09.1988.
3. The first Mid-term meeting of the Executive Committe was held at AIIMS, New Delhi on 16.07.1988.
4. Decided to form a 'Tumour Registry' to register histopathologically verified brain tumours with the following a committee members. Dr. Sarala Das - (Convenor) Dr. A. K. Banerjee Dr. R.Sarasa Bharati Arumugam Dr. D.K. Dastur Dr. Subimal Roy Dr. A.P. Desai The following Neurosurgeons were asked to assist the above Committee Prof. B. Ramamurthi Dr. V.K. Kak Dr. S.N. Bhagwati Dr. Manoj Bhattacharya.
5. The Sub-section of Neruo-Nurses has been registered with the Registrar of Firms and Societies, Chandigarh under Act 21 of 1860 as No. 1550 of 1988 and this Sub-section has been named as "Society of Indian Neuroscience Nurses (SINN).
6. A meeting of the Neuro-Technicians was organised by Dr. I.M.S. Sawhney alongside the annual Conference of the Society at Chandigarh. They formed the "Neuro-physiological Technologists Association" as a Sub-section of Neurological Society of India, on the lines of Neuro-Nurses Sub-section. Mr. D.N. Sankarappa from NIMHANS, Bangalore, Mr. S.K. Batish and Mr. Mukesh Sharma from PGMIER, Chandigarh were elected President, Secretary and Treasurer respectively of this Association.
1989
1. The Second Mid-term meeting of the Executive Committe was held at Medical Research Cente, Bombay Hospital on 28th May 1989.
2. The Society organised the following World Congress in New Delhi and actively participated in the 18th International Epilepsy Congress organised at New Delhi by Dr. M.C. Maheswari from 18-22 October 1989 :- (a) 9th International Congress of Neurological Surgery from 8-13 october 1989. (b) XIVth World Congress of Neurology from 22-27 October 1989.
3. The Neuro-physiological Technologists Sub-section of the Society has been officially registered with the Registrar of Firms & Societies, Chandigarh on 13th July 1989 and renamed as "Association of Neurophysiological Technologists of India (ANTI)".
4. The Society decided not to hold its annual conference as it was organising two world congress this year.
5. Decided to hold future mid term meetings at conferemce venue.
6. Neurosciences in India – Retrospect and Prospect brought out.
1991
Trauma sub committee was formed. Ciba Geigy gold medal for the best paper on epilepsy was started . Specific guidelines fore conduct of symposia were laid down.
1992
E. Merck awards discontinued and best paper award in neurology, neurosurgery and allied sciences were instituted.
1997
A website for the society called neurosocietyindia.org was started. Neurology India was placed on the Internet (http://www.cpindia.com/neurologyindia) Articles were accepted in floppies for quicker publication. The abstracts of the articles were available on the internet since March 1997. The Newsletter increased in size to 40 pages and became more "member friendly".

The full article on text format available on internet of Neurology India since: March 1999Neurology India got indexed in Index Medicus and was available on MEDLINE from March 1999 issue onwards. This reindexing was possible after a gap of 25 years Full text of Neurology India from its inception was made available on CD at NIMHANS
2000
1. Dr. Dilip Panikar was appointed as the first webmaster of the NSI website.
2. The proceedings of the annual conference were made available on a CD for the first time. Photo ID cards were issued to members for the first time.
3. The articles in pdf form i.e. the way they are printed in journal available on internet since March 2000.
2001
1. Registration of Newsletter under the Registrar of Newspaper Government of India. Registration No.TNENG / 2000 / 6029. RDN. No. 434 / 2000E.
2. Withdrawal of NSI affiliation from WFN.
3. A major revision of the byelaws and constitution of the society was ratified by the general body.
4. Photographs taken during the conference were made available on a CD.
5. The organizing committee of Neurocon 2001 released a Film on 50 Years of Neurosciences.
6. NSI website: The website of the NSI was changed to http://www.neurosocietyindia.com. The contents are regularly updated with the contents of the newsletter. Important announcements regarding membership dues and adoption of the new constitution have been highlighted. Major national and international meetings are represented on the site, with appropriate contacts and links. New cases for discussion have been added to the site.
2002
1. On line registration and on line submission of abstracts was first instituted at the Kochi conference.
2. On line confirmation of the status of the articles in Neurology India available to members since September 2002.
3. Free access to the internet edition of Neurology India till June 2002.
4. Facility for receipt of payment from non members desiring to read the latest lssues, from outside India, started since Sept. 2002.
